Up Stones from the County Walk Prev Next Slideshow

This piece of Fairfield County native sandstone was quarried near the village of Lithopolis (Greek for “City of Stone”, so named for the large deposits of sandstone found there). The stone comprised part of the foundation of Rock Mill at the Upper Falls of the Hocking River in Bloom and Greenfield Townships. The six-story gristmill is Ohio’s oldest and largest surviving mill with the largest overshot waterwheel in the state at 26 feet in diameter. | Fairfield
