The rock donated by Patrick Holmes and the Holmes family of Ironton was part of the LaGrange Furnace located on Porter Gap Road in Lawrence County. Pig iron furnaces were a major industry during the 1800s and a vital part of the economic growth of southern Ohio, so much so that Ironton was considered the iron capital of the nation during the Civil War era.
