A piece of limestone from along the Miami-Erie Canal has been chosen to represent Shelby County because of the impact the canal had on the settlement of the county. The canal was the first avenue for the transportation of imported and exported goods along with the immigration of settlers. The stone was used in construction of the canal around 1837.
