For over 150 years, starting in the 1820s, the grindstone business thrived in Washington County and, until the 1960s, Ohio produced over 90% of the 4.5 million tons of sandstone-grindstones produced in the U.S. During the early years, grindstones were quarried and hauled by oxen to the Ohio River where they were loaded on boats, later replaced by trains. This stone was quarried at the Constitution Stone Company, near Marietta. | Washington
