| This lovely vase is decorated with a portrait of a white egret and was made in 1905 by Rookwood Pottery of Cincinnati, Ohio. The Rookwood Pottery Company was founded in 1880 by Maria (mar-EYE-ah) Longworth Nichols. Maria's interest in ceramics began in 1873, when she began to decorate china, a popular activity for ladies at the time. The 1870s china decorating mania gave rise to the art pottery movement. (Simply defined, "art pottery" is pottery produced to be purely artistic in nature instead of utilitarian or commercial.) Maria and Rookwood remained at the forefront of the movement with bold ideas and innovative new techniques. |
